Baba King Nonya Delicatessen

This is truly a dining lesson in its own right. The owner has a passion for all things Peranakan and that extends way beyond the food. I was told that the dishes here were based on his grandmother’s recipes and she does checks on the quality every once in awhile.

The dishes I tried were personally recommended by the owner himself. The chicken buah keluak (a mashed nut with a slight bitter aftertaste - top) was fragrant and mildly spicy, the chicken sionh (a chicken cooked with a spicy tamarind marinate) was a hit with my dining companions but I found it very similar in taste to chicken teriyaki (the chef will so hate me!), the Nonya acah (pickled vegetables) was refreshing.

I previously also tried the assam fish dish and the steamed otah (spicy fish - right) which was equally delicious. A great find of an eatery in this part of the world.

I came back to Iggy’s dreaming of the pineapple soufflé and the dried shrimp cappellini. I had the most divine meal the last time, but this time around, I am not too sure. I had a tuna starter followed by the beef stew and didn’t find anything that impressed. The saving grace though was the pineapple soufflé that they agreed to whip up for me even though its no longer on the menu.

I jumped for joy when a friend brought me here – this place stays open till 4am. Woo hoo! I now have a place to go to if I am not up to the usual late night zhe char (cooked dishes) or prata (Indian bread usually eaten with curry). Some place that serves a fresh smoky flavoursome fish soup steamboat with plenty of cabbage and seaweed, just the way I like it.
